FAQ
1. Who can take these wilderness courses?
Anyone with a passion for the outdoors is welcome — from complete beginners to experienced adventurers. Some courses have prerequisites (like prior certifications or gear experience), and those details are listed on each course’s page so you know what you need before you sign up.
2. How do I register and what does it cost?
First, you’ll apply to Lake Tahoe Community College and set up your student portal. From there you register for courses through the portal and complete your payment to secure your spot. Tuition depends on your residency status (California resident vs non‑resident), and some courses may also have materials or field fees.
3. Do these courses count for college credit or certifications?
Yes! Many of the courses in our program count toward academic credit and some lead to industry‑recognized certifications (like Leave No Trace, Wilderness First Responder, or AMGA credentials). You can also use them toward certificates and degrees in Wilderness Education & Outdoor Leadership.
4. What experience or gear do I need before I start?
It depends on the class. Introductory courses are designed to be accessible with minimal prior experience, but technical or advanced field courses may expect you to have some skills or personal gear (like proper boots or a pack). Each course page has a section that explains prerequisites and gear requirements.
5. Where do the courses take place? Are they all outside?
Most of the classes in our program include real‑world outdoor field sessions right here in the Sierra Nevada and Lake Tahoe backcountry — your classroom is the wild. Some courses have a mix of classroom time and hands‑on field work, depending on what you’re learning.
