OUR STORY
10 YEARS OF WEOL
The Wilderness Education and Outdoor Leadership (WEOL) program at Lake Tahoe Community College grew from a simple idea: the best way to learn outdoor leadership is by actually being outside.
With the Sierra Nevada as our backyard, it didn’t make sense to keep learning inside a classroom. So the program was built around the landscapes that surround Lake Tahoe. Mountains, forests, rivers, and open water, where students can practice real skills in real environments.
Over time, WEOL has grown into a program that offers courses in wilderness medicine, avalanche education, search and rescue, backpacking, kayaking, and expedition travel. Along the way, students gain technical experience, leadership skills, and industry certifications that help prepare them for careers in the outdoor world.
But at its core, WEOL has always been about something simple: helping people build the confidence and skills to travel responsibly in wild places and lead others along the way.

About Wilderness Education at LTCC
WEOL is an experiential outdoor education program at Lake Tahoe Community College focused on leadership, technical skills, and responsible wilderness travel.
Courses combine classroom learning with hands-on field instruction in the mountains and waterways around Lake Tahoe. Students learn through practice; planning trips, managing risk, navigating terrain, and working as part of a team in dynamic outdoor environments.
Whether students are preparing for a career in the outdoor industry or simply want to build stronger backcountry skills, WEOL provides the training and experience to get there.

A Place Like No Other
One of the things that makes WEOL unique is where we’re located. Lake Tahoe and the Sierra Nevada provide immediate access to mountains, forests, alpine terrain, rivers, and open water.
For many courses, the classroom doesn’t end at the campus; it continues out on the trail, on the water, and in the mountains.
